This was the day many people had been waiting and hoping years for… Google takes up the Open Source / Linux code base and enters into full competition with Microsoft in the operating system market. Now it is official, as Google announced on their blog yesterday. The “Chrome OS” will be, like Android, based on the Linux kernel and essentially a Google-sponsored re-write of the user interface over that to build a next-generation, cloud OS geared to run web apps. The most important point here is “browser” based vs.

Ian Paul of PC World has recently answered five important questions about Google Chrome OS. The big news this morning is Google’s Chrome OS: a Linux-based operating system designed specifically for getting to the Web and Web apps faster. If that sounds familiar, that’s because Google’s Web browser, Chrome, was built around the same idea of rendering Web pages and Web applications faster and better than traditional browsers. Those claims have since been put to the test, and the results for Chrome have so far been mixed.

Google’s pulled the “beta” label of its cloud based apps early this week and on Tuesday said Chrome would be its operating system for netbooks. Ace blogger and former PCWeek colleague Dave Churbuck posted a concise piece on the announcement here that deserves a read. I agree with Dave completely: Google’s moves could be the first wedge that topples the Wintel hegemony.

The Sunday Financial Times has reported that Vodafone has been mulling a move to bid on T-Mobile, which has been struggling significantly lately. It is noteworthy that along with Vodafone, 3 and Orange are also in the fray to acquire T-Mobile. The report, however, did not quote any response from either Vodafone or T-Mobile. The FT also reports that the talks of offloading T-Mobile have been in the air for a few months now.
07/08/2009
If the Financial Times report that appeared on Sunday about Vodafone buying T-Mobile is true, then it could put Vodafone and telecom regulator Ofcom on a collision course. Vodafone already enjoys a 25% share in the mobile broadband market and if it manages to acquire T-Mobile , it could be a leader in the market by a long way with a share of about 40%. Ofcom, which has successfully managed to avoid any monopolistic situation in the market by ensuring that the share of all the big four players is almost similar, is likely to get upset over the imbalance this deal is bound to create.

According to Financial Times reports, Vodafone has offered proposal to buy the troubled mobile broadband company, T-Mobile UK, and it would make Vodafone the largest mobile broadband service provider in the UK if the deal proves successful. The report published in the Financial Times’ Sunday edition was however not confirmed by either of the companies. The paper cited sources familiar with the information, which has been coming out during the past few months regarding the sale of T-Mobile.
07/08/2009
Vodafone is rumoured to be all set to bid for T-Mobile, according to the Financial Times. This report comes after months of speculation over T-Mobile UK’s sale after Deutsche Telekom, the parent company for T-Mobile , had hinted that it was not keen on carrying on with the struggling division in an increasingly tough UK mobile broadband market. However, none of the companies has confirmed to the possibility of such a deal. The report cited sources close to the people who are aware of the decision making process.

Vodafone with its 25 percent share of UK’s mobile broadband market is reportedly deliberating on a buy-out of the troubled T-Mobile UK. The report which came out in Sunday’s Financial Times cited authentic sources who are close to the decision making process. However, none of the parties has confirmed the rumours. The report comes after a series of conjectures over T-Mobile’s sale for the past few months. According to the report, Deutsche Telekom , the parent organisation of T-Mobile hinted at selling its mobile broadband division for the UK market six months ago.
07/08/2009
Vodafone is likely to compete with 3 and Orange for the T-Mobile UK buy-out. The report published in Sunday’s Financial Times cited reliable inside sources, who were well aware of the happenings. However, neither Vodafone nor T-Mobile has confirmed the rumours. The Financial Times reported that Deutsche Telekom has been considering the sale of its struggling subsidiary company for more than six months. They are also reported to have diminished the value of T-Mobile early last month, which some interpreted as the sign of an impending sale.
07/08/2009
Six months ago the Financial Times reported that Deutsche Telekom was not prepared to endure any more failures that were associated with its daughter company, T-Mobile UK. Now an article in Sunday’s FT says that Vodafone is showing interest in taking over T-Mobile after it realized that Deutsche Telekom is willing to part with it. No claims have been made by any parties in either accepting or denying the rumours.
07/08/2009
If a report in Sunday’s Financial Times is to be believed then Vodafone is going to become a major power in the UK mobile broadband sector. The report, which refuses to cite its source, claimed that Vodafone is contemplating taking over T-Mobile UK, which is currently in a bad patch. Neither Vodafone nor T-Mobile offered any comments to the report, but the FT hinted that its sources might be from the inside.

Market regulators might be in for a tough time in maintaining fair competition if Vodafone takes over T-Mobile UK. At present Vodafone has a 25 per cent share in the market and it is one of the four companies that are enjoying comfortable and equal positions in the mobile broadband sector. However, this deal will get Vodafone an additional 15 per cent share, which would harm competition and would thus upset Ofcom.
