Great summary of the filesharing issue and how to solve it by marrying consumer interests and artists income alike. Source : Open Letter to Lord Mandelson , First Secretary of State, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation & Skills (UK). By Gerd Leonhard, October 12, 2009 “Dear Lord Mandelson, The proposed “3 Strikes” legislation is flawed in many more ways than I could hope to outline in this letter, and many of these issues have already been addressed in many other places.

The iPhone is an incredibly impressive device. Much how the Blackberry put email access into your pocket, the iPhone has provided the first usable mobile browsing experience. As the first mover in the space, Apple exercises a near monopoly in the space with an impressive 40% market share in mobile internet traffic. Kudos to everyone involved in the effort at Apple for setting a high bar for any potential competitor.   Some would put Apple’s early success in historic terms, claiming the iPhone has the fastest user growth in tech history .

I’ve been using the device for a few weeks now. It has a lot of potential and things can be done, but many applications/features lack the quality of a mature product: inconsistent and unfriendly interface, missing features etc. Major issues: 1. Small POI database. Only 2 mln POIs, and so far, no way to buy or import additional POIs. Big problem for me, and no easy way around. Finding missing POIs using Google at home takes longer than on a regular GPS unit with built-in POIs.

I have longed for an ebook reader for some time, but the most popular one – the Amazon Kindle – has long been reserved solely for the US market. Whilst it has many competitors, like the Sony Reader, I had to wonder about how many titles were available for such platforms. I used to use my iPhone to read public domain books, through the Amazon recently started exporting the Kindle to other countries, so I bought one.

Scott Goodstein, who ran the social media platforms for the Obama campaign, tis telling the audience here at the No More Homeless Pets conference that he thinks the lessons learned in that and other political campaigns apply to animal welfare, too. The world has changed — TV viewership is going down. Viewing habits have changed. “Programs” like the news or weather have been replaced by cable news and the weather channel. Also, people are multi-tasking — checking email, TV on in background, etc.

RIM’s BlackBerry is the top enterprise smartphone ; it’s also the dominant smartphone by marketshare in the US (Nokia dominates outside North America). The Bold and the Tour are well loved, so is the Curve. While BlackBerry  loyalty and satisfaction are below the iPhone’s , people love the physical keyboard (I’m not one of them). And BlackBerry has a strong brand. So RIM would appear to be in a good position overall. However, the Storm — RIM’s “answer” to the iPhone — was quite a disappointment in terms of sales and user experience.

We knew Clearwire would be snaking its 4G services to select markets in North Carolina, Hawaii and Texas before the year’s end, but it’s always reassuring to hear a corporation come right out and affirm that those leaked dates are still solid. What’s interesting about the latest announcement is that both Clearwire and Sprint will be offering 4G in these same cities under their own brands, even though the signals and towers used will be the same.
