We knew Clearwire would be snaking its 4G services to select markets in North Carolina, Hawaii and Texas before the year’s end, but it’s always reassuring to hear a corporation come right out and affirm that those leaked dates are still solid. What’s interesting about the latest announcement is that both Clearwire and Sprint will be offering 4G in these same cities under their own brands, even though the signals and towers used will be the same.

Ebooks are a big, complex topic and it seems to me that the whole ebook industry is so splintered that it may never get itself together. I have no idea how many ebook formats there are out there but there are enough to create a problem for anyone thinking about trying out electronic books. The hardware choice is wide too. Devices range from simple PDF readers to devices that contain cellular data modems and come with online access to an electronic bookshop controlled by the device manufacturer.

What’s after the iPhone? - blog.markhopwood.com 10/23/2009 2 billion applications have been downloaded for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and the iPhone has achieved about 1% of the global market for mobile phones. These are great achievements, and it’s easy to see why the iPhone has become so popular. Compared to its predecessors it’s revolutionary, a clear advance, and it’s transforming the market for mobile devices. The future doesn’t necessarily belong to Apple and the iPhone, though.

Gambling just used to be something that you would have to go to the casino for. But so practically has changed over the last few years and you can now gamble in multiple ways. Jim Cramer issued a “mea culpa” for his recent buy recommendation of TriQuint Semiconductor (TQNT) . On Thursday, TriQuint traded 28% lower after the company missed Wall Street’s revenue estimates and offered up reduced guidance. The company also warned that a Korean handset maker (possibly Samsung) would slow production. Cramer said the move isn’t justified. He explained that TriQuint was taken lower by its exposure to regular mobile phones, not smartphones, and the Korean company’s cutbacks seem to be an isolated event.

Pdf documents continue to be a pain in the butt for mobile web users. Most mobile browsers can’t open them and downloading a PDF for viewing with a dedicated reader app is time consuming and only possible on fairly advanced handsets. A month ago I wrote about a way to view PDFs in Opera Mini by pasting the PDF’s URL into an online PDF to HTML converter form. That works but requires quite a few steps to accomplish and isn’t particularly user friendly.

You don’t have to go far on-line to find a Google custom search bar. And I don’t mean “you” in general - I mean you , specifically. Just look up at the top right hand corner of this page. Yep, there’s our very own Google custom search bar. And now that service will be available to anyone with a mobile web page, because Google has launched its custom search service for mobile. What’s the big deal? The Custom Search Engine is a part of what Google calls its Co-op platform.

I rather like this little graphic from Ross Mayfield, based on ideas being discussed at this year’s Web 2.0 Expo . You can download the supporting report Web Squared: Web 2.0 Five Years On . I think it neatly encapsulated the four issues that will effect the web, and which the publishing business needs to get its head around. I talk a lot about social on here, and the whole hyper-local journalism movement is, to some degree, predicated on the idea of geo-centric technology, even if the potential benefits of geocoding information haven’t really been discussed.
