2 billion applications have been downloaded for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and the iPhone has achieved about 1% of the global market for mobile phones. These are great achievements, and it’s easy to see why the iPhone has become so popular. Compared to its predecessors it’s revolutionary, a clear advance, and it’s transforming the market for mobile devices. The future doesn’t necessarily belong to Apple and the iPhone, though.

Microsoft’s Windows 7 is released yesterday , and the boys and girls at Redmond are probably feeling very pleased with the news that pre-orders on Amazon for its latest OS have broken records. Windows 7 is now the biggest pre-order product in Amazon’s history. Not to be outdone, Apple is busy breaking records too. At the Web 2.0 Summit this week, Morgan Stanley’s Managing Director Mary Meeker revealed that the iPhone/iPod touch is the fastest growing consumer electronics platform in history.

Lest you think I’m only going to write about gothic horror novels, I wound up the internet machine this morning and found this article about people who don’t have cellphones on purpose , because they don’t like the idea of being reachable at all times. A noble pursuit, but the problem is, no one else knows how to deal with it: Ms. Mboya always picks a time and a landmark to meet friends and carries quarters in case she has to use a payphone. Still, her friends are not used to planning their social lives in advance.

Stop the presses! The Finnish dream used to be getting a job at Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ). They maintained the number 1 position in terms of most desirable employers for years. This year however, they didn’t even make it into the top three. For economists getting out of University, Nokia is now the 4th most popular choice. For fresh out of school engineers, Nokia is now 6th. The only people who like to work for Nokia are IT people, which makes sense Nokia’s IT budget is larger than a small African nation’s yearly health expenditures.

Staying connected is not just a desire these days. Often times, it’s mandatory as we now do our business anytime, anywhere. We need cell phones for calling and mobile Internet service for everything else. Things like paying bills, faxing, and conducting business over the Internet can all be done while on the road — giving many the freedom to travel like never before.

Nokia has filed a complaint against Apple alleging that Apple’s iPhone infringes Nokia patents for GSM, UMTS and wireless LAN (WLAN) standards (and we always thought that it would be Apple vs Palm ). The suit concerns all iPhone models produced by Apple. While the original iPhone launched back in 2007 and since then has sold more than 50million iPhones and iPod touch combined. According to Nokia some 40 companies license these patents from them (which includes all major mobile manufacturers) and apparently Apple disagreed to the license terms that Nokia placed.

I’ve only had this a week but I’ve already started using it a lot and have been pleasantly surprised seeing just how far I can push this little rascal! You can take it anywhere as it’s the size of a small book and is very lightweight for a laptop. Traditional notebook laptops are designed to be desktop replacements, so they can end up too big, too heavy, and generally just too *much* for checking your email or editing a Word document in the few minutes you have whilst waiting for the train.

The presentation took place on Tuesday at the Web 2.0 Conference. Here are a Few of the Highlights from The Scholarly Kitchen Post: Meeker notes that while the desktop Internet was largely paid for by advertising and other sources of support, the mobile Internet is so far largely paid for by individuals, a significiant shift in payment sources.

This implies apple copied their patented inventions.
