Very interesting presentation by Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker (yes, that Mary Meeker) at the recent Web 2.0 Conference in San Francisco. Check out this article and the actual presentation here . Besides a fairly healthy prognosis for internet (and related business) growth, the salient theme is that the mobile internet is big…and booming – led in part by “explosive” growth in iPhone and iTouch devices. Indeed, a major fuel to this growth is the sheer increase in cloud-based mobile devices using platforms like GPS, 3G, wi-fi and Bluetooth.

We already know Dell is working on an Android smartphone and now we learn they have an Android MID (mobile internet device) as well. Vietnamese site Tinhte.com got their hands on an early prototype and captured a quick video. The engineering sample lists the model variant as “US” so it might be headed for our shores. Highlights of the device include: 5-inch WVGA 800 x 480 touchscreen Android 2.0 5-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash Front-facing video camera 1,300 mAh battery WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G WWAN connectivity Important details like pricing and availability are unknown at this time.

With the help of the team at Tego Interactive – an experienced team of professionals helping to build businesses (including mine) through converged Web and mobile solutions – I have quietly launched a new-look website and a brand new mobile site that got rave reviews on WAP Review . And with the assistance of Alexander Vlasblom and the rest of the Netsize team I have (once again) brought together a stellar line-up of cool companies and key executives for this year’s Netsize Guide .

A few years ago, some companies like Stoke and Bridgeport Networks emerged with a noble vision: Create a super phone network technology that lets you move seamlessly back and forth from your home WiFi connection to the cellular network outside. That way, you’d use the strongest and least expensive network available to you at the time. While the vision has partly been realized — there are phone plans that let you do this — the sector has been encumbered by consumers unable to figure out the confusing technology, and carriers who who aren’t aggressively pushing or explaining it very well.

Dell has already confirmed that it will bring an Android smartphone to a U.S. carrier, and now we get a look at a Dell mobile internet device (MID) that’s also running Android. The Dell Streak is a MID that has an 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen and multitouch functionality. There’s also a 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G, and a 1,300 mAh battery. The Streak comes with Android 2.0 and judging from the leaked hands-on video below, it runs pretty sweet.

Dell is obviously not happy with the fact that the Taiwanese from Acer have kicked them off from the second place slot in the world’s PC manufacturer rankings, hence why, as of late, they’re doing everything possible to get media attention. If last week Michael Dell broke it that the company is actually going to bring their Android smartphone to the US, today we caught wind that all those Dell MID rumors are actually true and that the Dell Streak is real.

It looks like Dell’s rumored slightly-larger-than-an-iPod-touch Android MID that we heard about back in late June has finally seen the light of day. Apparently called the Dell Streak (I hope that’s not the final product name), it’s a 5-inch mobile internet device similar to the recently-released Archos 5 Internet Tablet with the added functionality of 3G wireless data connectivity. The actual hardware is labeled as an “engineering sample” with a US-based model number, so it could still be a while until we actually see the finished product here.

Android is quickly picking up steam as 2009 comes closer to and end. I’m certainly not complaining as the platform will soon be my new home. However, we will inevitably see companies releasing sub-standard hardware yet cashing in on this Android movement. The Phillips v808 isn’t anything special physically. The specs don’t leave much room for excitement either. The biggest omission is the lack of 3G as this non-looker is GSM/GPRS/EDGE only.

Already, some of my friends in the geek-laden Information Science department up the street are atwitter with excitement. Alas, call me a killjoy, but I’m at a loss to see where eReader technology is going. From my point of view, the eReader market looks like one big dead end. And it’s not, as you might suppose, because I don’t see the benefits of these gadgets. On the contrary, I’ve owned one in the past.
