A question came up on the boards.ie programming forum a week or so ago about whether to write apps for the iPhone or the Android platform. With Suura, we’ve been looking at what platforms to write clients for (and which to write for first), and it occurs to me that the data on what’s actually going on and what the hype is pushing are monumentally disparate. Believe the hype and the competition is all between Android and WebOS. Thing is, all that noise is ignoring a few details.

If you actually use the internet on a BlackBerry for anything worthwhile, you already know how terrible and downright useless the standard browser is. Thankfully there are options. Today’s focus will be Bolt. A new browser relative to other players’ time on the market such as Opera mini doesn’t mean that Bolt is eons behind. Far from it actually. Even the first 1.0 build was awesome. With 1.5 that awesomeness only gets better. The list of updates is rather impressive and just goes to show how dedicated the Bolt team really is.

Online analysts would like you to know that there’s a great new industry growth engine revving up — mobile ads. “We’re optimistic about mobile ads.” “We’re bullish on mobile ads.” “Google’s Verizon deal is evidence of the huge new opportunity in mobile ads.” Enough. Analysts have been saying the same thing since 1995… and mobile advertising is still a rounding error. Just about every chart we’ve ever seen of mobile advertising since the mid-1990s has looked like this.
