The Gmail team announced Push for iPhone and Windows Mobile user. Push enables the user to get the updates (in this case emails) as soon as they arrive. From the official blog: When we launched Google Sync for Contacts and Google Calendar earlier this year, an over-the-air, always-on connection to sync mail was noticeably absent. We heard your requests loud and clear, and starting today you can use Google Sync to get your Gmail messages pushed directly to your iPhone, iPod Touch, or Windows Mobile device.

There has been a growing consensus that mobile phones are a key platform for reaching minorities in the U.S. when it comes to health information: Earlier this week we pointed readers to a report by the The Hispanic Institute and Mobile Future that found more than 50 percent of the U.S. Hispanic population uses the mobile Internet, while one about one third of U.S. whites do. The Pew Internet Group has published research that concluded this many times in the past.

by Jon Hunter A newly released survey has claimed an increased use of phones and the internet is undermining pupils ability to study and is responsible for poor grammar amongst many school children. The Cranfield School of Management has produced the report which blames children’s use of mobile phones and the internet for falling standards in pupils study, research and written communication skills. The paper claims that 90 per cent of students did most research on the internet, which is twice the proportion who did their research by traditional books.

Much to my dismay I found out that with the update to iPhone OS 3.1 Apple had disabled the workaround to be able to tether using the iPhone. Tethering was a very nice way to get online while on the go and a feature I would even be willing to pay a (small) amount of money for. I think it’s more likely that AT&T asked for them to remove it, than T-Mobile but it was definitely a telco because Apple has zero interest in making their hardware less capable.

Touchscreens. They make a lot of sense on cellphones and handheld devices. They make sense for artists looking for a precise way to draw on a screen without a mouse. And they make sense for tablet-style devices without keyboards, because how else are you going to click or enter text? But I’m still not entirely convinced that tablets in general make a lot of sense. I mean, sure, they’re cool. But what do they really add to the computing experience? I can type 90+ words a minute, but I can barely read my own handwriting.

GPRS vs WAP In the old days of mobile internet, manufacturers and designers had a hard time providing internet access that is similar to what computers can achieve with modems and an HTML browser. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) was the first technology that was successfully implemented into the 2G mobile phone systems to send and receive data between mobile phones and transmission towers. But by itself, GPRS does not provide the mechanisms for user to browse the internet.
