Vodafone has declared the upgrade of its mobile broadband network in parts of Liverpool, Birmingham and London to 14.4 Mbps from speeds of 7.2Mbps. However, this is unlikely to bring about any improvement in actual user experience as the real-time speeds are still expected to be in the range of 1Mbps to 5 Mbps. Vodafone already has one of the fastest broadband networks in the country with a theoretical speed of 7.2Mbps. But, as company officials were forced to admit recently, the actual speeds have always been between 1 to 5Mbps.

Vodafone is all set to become the pioneer in providing the new generation HSDPA, with the successful upgrade of its mobile broadband speed to 14.4Mbps in areas of London, Birmingham and Liverpool. Vodafone had earlier claimed to provide one of the speediest networks in the UK, with a working speed of 7.2Mbps. However, the company later admitted that their actual speeds in fact did not exceed 5Mbps. The company now plans to spread its new upgraded mobile broadband UK network to other parts of the country in the coming months.

Vodafone has recently announced the introduction of newer and faster mobile broadband services for its customers. The company is offering 14.4Mbps speeds in certain areas of the UK. Although only pockets in Birmingham, Liverpool and London will receive the faster services as of now, Vodafone said the new mobile broadband network would soon spread to other places. However, the speed of wireless broadband will actually rest on a number of issues (as it always does) including the distance of the user from the closest base station and the number of people using the network.

This week sees a big step forward in Symbian’s relationship with China mobile (more as the week goes on). Nokia is launching a mobile financial service next year targeting consumers, mainly in emerging markets, with a phone but no banking account. Consumers would thus be the Sec D junta, who use the mobile as a means to earn livelihoods but do-not have any social and financial security. There are 4 billion mobile phone users globally but only 1.6 billion bank accounts and 1 billion credit cards.
