It looks like Research in Motion is serious about their claim that the BlackBerry Browser will be on par with the iPhone’s Safari by next summer. A lot of people have been burnt predicting a big future for mobile applications. The last one to really break out was SMS in the mid-nineties. Since then there have been various stabs at other useful applications but none of them have really stuck. I remember using an early version of mobile internet access in about 2000 and it was terrible. Since then I have stuck to very simple mobiles which do calls and text without having to be recharged every five minutes.

With the proliferation of texting, tweeting, facebooking, mobile internet, push notification, and e-mail everywhere, American’s and Austinites are on their phones more and more. Texting while driving bans is a new public policy floating around similar to the hands free headset requirements for talking in the late 90’s and early part of this decade.
That debate has come to Austin.
Mayor Lee Leffingwell, Mayor Pro Tem Mike Martinez and Councilmember Chris Riley are sponsoring a City Council resolution calling for the prohibition of text messaging and internet use while driving.
“Studies make this very clear,” said Mayor Pro Tem Mike Martinez.
That debate has come to Austin.

The problem with launching a location-enabled service is that there are hundreds of other services already out there. The early adopter user base is spread all over these services and it makes it hard for any to gain traction and critical mass. The other problem is that each application has a fixed use as defined and programmed by the developer which means it may not hit the target requirement.

I finally got an iphone last week! Actually Chris was the one who did all the internet booking, then confirming and collecting of the phone for me… we were going to get 2 but I thought it would be safer to start with one and see how we liked it before getting another. Anyway.. if it was left up to me, I’d have done nothing about getting the phone so it was great of Chris to do it all.

Vodacom Zambia has taken out an injunction against the country’s regulator CAZ over a trial 3G authorisation it gave two years ago to Zain. All this might be a storm in a tea cup were it not for changing attitudes to 3G and what it might be used for in Africa.
