Piggybackers, or users who exploit unsecured wireless networks without the knowledge of their owners, pose a major threat to cyber security. A group of individuals look for wireless access points in different areas and provide this information to piggybackers . These people are called wardrivers, and their aim is to find unsecured networks and to tell piggybackers about them. The Queensland Police will be using the very same tactic to fight the problem of piggybacking.
07/29/2009
Queensland, Australia is one of the few places whose police has outlined a strategy for ensuring that the wireless networks are adequately secured. The strategy involves searching for open networks and issuing warnings regarding the dangers of an unsecured network. A group of people called ‘wardrivers’ who have the requisite technical skills and tools, comb an area to find and record details about various wireless access points. Their aim is to assist piggybackers by providing information about Wi-Fi networks that are not secured.
07/29/2009
Wardriving and Piggybacking is very common in the cyber world. Wardrivers are those who identify open wireless networks, compile this information and give it to piggybackers , who then use it to enter such networks for their own purposes. In a bid to end such unauthorised entry into another’s network, the Queensland police are planning to start a campaign similar to the “lock your car” campaign of yesteryears.
07/29/2009
Speaking to iTnews, Detective Superintendent of Queensland Police, Brian Hay, who was also awarded the McAfee Cyber Crime Fighter award, stated that the Australian police plan to use the old “lock your car” style campaign to fight cyber crime in the state. In the old days, when people left their car unlocked, the police would leave a note stating the hassles of leaving a car unlocked and the advantages of locking it.
07/29/2009
In a bid to ensure network and data safety for Wi-Fi users, the Queensland Police have intensified their activities to search for networks that are not secure and to educate their owners on the dangers of an unsecure network and the strategies to improve network security. Australian police are worried about the negligence of people using unsecure Wi-Fi networks. They fall easy prey to Wardrivers, who are constantly seeking such networks and transferring this data to the piggybackers , who utilise the data and hack into the network.
07/29/2009
In the fight against ‘wardrivers’, people who are involved in active search, logging and collection of data on access points for wireless connections to hep wireless internet piggybackers, the Queensland Police have decided to launch a new campaign to identify insecure networks in different areas. The police have decided to follow the same course as that taken by these wardrivers to locate these networks. After finding an insecure network, they plan to caution the owner of the router about the potential risks of such unsecured connections.
07/29/2009
In a recent development, Queensland police spoke about their wireless network protection campaign, under which they have plans to search for and identify open networks in their area. The proposed action has been taken in response to the problem of wardrivers, who are the people actively engaged in aiding piggybackers by searching and collecting data about open network connections.

Smartphone customers benefit from click-to-pay operator billing experience – even using Wi-Fi Bango, the leading mobile payment and analytics company, today announced Wi-Fi enabled operator billing for smartphones. While mobile operator payments deliver significantly more successful transactions, than traditional payment methods, mobile content revenues have been impacted by the increasing popularity of smartphones, such as Blackberry and iPhone.
07/29/2009
Wardrivers and piggybackers on unsecured wireless networks in Queensland, Australia now have reason to fear. The Police have decided to end their era of free riding other people’s networks by warning the owners of the networks in advance. The Police will be looking for people with open, unsafe networks, and would then tell them about the dangers of it, including piggybacking . They would also tell them about the important measures that they should take to protect themselves.
07/29/2009
Cyber security seems to be one of the important concerns of the Queensland Police. Detective Superintendent Brian Hay, speaking for the Police department, said that they are starting a campaign to improve the security of wireless networks, similar to the one conducted against poor vehicle security in the past. In that campaign, which addressed the dangers of unlocked cars, the Police conducted checks to see if cars parked near public areas such as railway stations were locked or not, and left a letter for people regarding possible consequences of unlocked doors if they found that a car was not locked.

Well, after 2 years of 24/7 use on my Sprint Blackberry 8830, my Blackberry kept flickering and resetting, causing me to get a new phone. Well, it turns out that Sprint had the Palm Pre out for over a month now and I was sorta skeptical on how well the Palm Pre would perform. I actually wanted to wait for the new Blackberry and they HAD the new Blackberry Tour, but I couldn’t let go of the fact that Palm Pre was linux-based and also can be hacked as a Wifi router.

Occasionally someone points out the dangers and brings a healthy edge of sobriety to the conversation but usually its just blue-sky projections about how many happy customers will become your friend on Facebook or follow you on Twitter.I have occasionally had melt-downs where I suggested that some brands should not enter social media, or that perhaps the risks outweigh the benefits.

Mobile internet junkies looking for more speed will be pleased to know that Rogers is working hard to address your needs. Yes, that’s what Rogers is currently working. 21Mbps is unheard of in most countries, and when it does go live in August in the greater Toronto area, Rogers will be the first carrier to offer up such insane mobile download speeds in the whole North American region.

Mobile broadband services are finally beginning to grow as they become more accessible by the mobile phone. Competition and a saturated mobile voice market also means the operators are forced to offer very competitive capped data packages. Such affordability and certainty (no bill shock) is the key reason for growth. This development is complimented/supported by new technologies like HSPA which are bringing more efficiency to the network and allowing the operators to offer these products.

So all these rumors abuzz about the HTC Leo specs and a “clamshell phone” are a bit on the money and a bit off. First, while technically a phone, it’s more a long the lines of a Mobile Internet Device (MID) then smartphone. Second, it’s not replacing HTC Universal but rather the HTC Athena , which garnered a lot of attention but seemed more experimental than anything. In short, the HTC Leo is the very same HTC Thoth that was mentioned in the leaked HTC 2009 Roadmap.
