Just today, Rogers announced that they’ll be rolling out the 21Mbps hi-speed HSPA+ service in August. Rogers will be the first company in North America to release this high of a download speed. They state that it will first be released in the Greater Toronto Area and will progressively increase it’s speed to 21Mbps. My guess is that Rogers wants to provide consumers with HSPA+ speeds before going straight towards LTE like most carriers have thought of doing.

Novatel’s just announced its North American-friendly MiFi 2372 router with GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSPA . The Mifi 2372 will offer 7.2Mbps HSDPA sharing for up to five connections via WiFi. If you recall, the European, 900/1900/2100MHz version launched back in June, so we’re happy to see it make its way to our shores at long last. The 2372 also boasts a GPS receiver and microSD card slot, and while there’s no word on pricing or definite date of availability, we can assume it’ll be offered on subsidy from AT&T and Rogers, and we hope that happens soon.

All of us rely greatly on our cell-phones for staying in touch. With so many of us hard-pressed for time, we often have to settle for shorter and quicker ways of communicating – text messages, which works as the perfect savior to our needs of keeping it short while keeping in touch! However, there is a flipside to this situation. When you keep letting those SMS fly from your fingers one after another, you could end up with a pretty high bill from your network provider.

It’s now commonplace after major sports events to see a ranking of brands media exposure in terms of value. Front Row Analytics has done well to develop a system that captures broadcast mentions, camera exposure, and various other impressions a brand receives over the course of event, incorporate the length of time of the exposures, presumably number of viewers, and place a generic dollar value of its media time. While admirable, it’s yet another measurement to add to the clutter that adds minimal additional value.

Segment 1: Time for a Break Cramer said that today was a sell the news day because the media’s opinion on corporate earnings seems to have changed from last week. Companies like Caterpillar (X) , Eaton (X) , and Ford (X) reported mediocre results last week and the market was very pleased by the news, but Corning (GLW) , Honeywell (HON) , and Verizon (VZ) reported good results today and the stock sold off. Cramer thinks that this is a sign that the market is too overbought, and said that it is time for a pullback.

Microsoft’s Windows is still shipped on 97 per cent of all new PCs. Thanks to the emergence of new classes of portable, internet-connected devices, a potentially disruptive sea-change is now under way in the fastest-growing areas of personal computing and Windows is not exactly in the driver seat on this ground. As a PC operating system, it turned out that the world did not need, or want, Linux. The ubiquity of Windows guaranteed that other software developers would write their programs to run on it, creating an effective barrier to entry for others trying to break into the market.

At the recently held Broadband for All eForum seminar, Phil Sheppard, Director of Technical Solutions at 3 UK expressed that a more dependable and consistent network could be established across the country with the help of mobile broadband. He said that it was the more feasible option in comparison to fixed landline broadband and its most promising feature was that it didn’t require much capital expenditure. But Sheppard should have made the statement with supporting data and concrete facts and figures for making his claim look more trustworthy.
07/28/2009
A recent study by Broadband Genie shows that most of the mobile internet users feel frustrated with the speed of their internet connection. This is in contrast with the opinion of the Director of Technical Solutions at 3 UK, Phil Sheppard, who said that mobile internet could be a good solution for those who do not have access to fixed line broadband. The UK government intends to make internet available to everyone in the country. Currently there are close to 2 million families with no access to broadband.
07/28/2009
The UK government is determined to make internet available to those millions of households who still do not have it. However, it is a tough and resource-consuming task. Recently the government organised a Broadband for All eForum seminar where the Digital Britain report of Lord Carter regarding the same issue came to be discussed. A suggestion to fulfil the government aspirations was made by Phil Sheppard from 3 UK, the mobile broadband company. Mr. Sheppard advocated the use of mobile broadband.
07/28/2009
Broadband Genie’s latest survey revealed that almost 90 percent of the country’s mobile broadband users were not satisfied with the speed of the service and felt that fixed line broadband was much better in this respect. Despite such negative perceptions about mobile broadband, it was surprising to hear Phil Sheppard, Director, Technical Solutions, 3 UK, who said that mobile broadband will be giving strong competition to fixed line broadband in the near future.
07/28/2009
Addressing a Broadband for all eForum seminar, Phil Sheppard, the Technical Solutions Director at 3 UK categorically stated that Mobile Broadband is the way of the future as it is fast and reliable and is excellent in terms of set up cost. He stated that mobile broadband could possibly be the practical alternative to fixed line in the near future.
07/28/2009
Phil Sheppard, the Director for Technical Solutions at 3 UK, while addressing a panel meet discussing Lord Carter’s Digital Britain report, emphatically said that mobile broadband will help the government fulfil its pledge of providing broadband to the entire UK. He added that installing and launching mobile broadband across the country was far cheaper than laying fixed line internet. According to Sheppard, all that mobile broadband needed was access to the spectrum and it did not require any financial support from the government.

With the whole “direct to consumer” approach failing epically, Clarion has evidently resorted to pushing remaining inventory of its largely unwanted MiND mobile internet device onto Nissan dealers in Los Angeles. In all fairness, we do suspect that these are moving more briskly than, say, Celio’s REDFLY, but we can count the amount of MIDs we’ve seen in public on two or three hands. At any rate, Nissan has signed on to offer the multifaceted Atom-powered device as an optional accessory in its Cube, but at least initially, it’ll only be made available at select dealers in the LA area.
