[Posted by Sarah Rotman Epps ] A little birdie told me several weeks ago that Polymer Vision , maker of the “rollable” pocket-size Readius, would be filing for bankruptcy, and lo and behold, they did, as reported on July 15 by the Hampshire Chronicle , the local paper of Millbrook, England, where the company was based. The story has since been picked up by Engadget, and here’s our two cents. First, a bit of background: Royal Philips Electronics was one of the early investors in E Ink, which makes the displays for nearly all eReaders on the market today.

Online banking revolutionized the way we banked. People today laugh at the thought of balancing your checkbook, viewing it as a practically medieval task. Need to pay your credit card? Need to make sure that check from your roommate didn’t bounce? Want to review your checking account before a night out on the town? You see where I’m going with this. It’s immediate. It’s accurate. And now it’s mobile. Perhaps to say “now” is rather inaccurate- mobile banking has been around for some time.

Interesting article in USA Today on Jakob Nielsen’s group (NNG) research on the mobile web. Their results show it is much slower and less accurate to use the web on a mobile device: A study to be released Monday by the researchers — they’re product “usability” experts — found that the average success rate in completing various tasks on the mobile Internet is just 59%, compared to an average success rate of 80% for websites on a regular PC. I spend all day on the computer, totally connected.

Yes, HTC is coming out with Viva, a brand new mobile phone. It is a touch screen mobile phone offering more benefit, more advantages and more features one can ever use. Estimates to be around 300 Pounds, this is one expensive phone for those who can’t afford it. For those who can, this is one great gadget to manage everything from personal to work. The design is not too flattering. However, with features such as GPS, one hardly depends on the design. The inside is more important than the outside.

Forty years after putting a human on the moon, we’re faced with the same question we had that day: Now what? My vote is not moon colonization, or sending people to Mars. No, let’s do something really challenging — but arguably far more beneficial. Let’s finally deliver stellar mobile web experience. I’m proposing this in light of the new study that finds typical mobile web experiences excurciating.

The 2007 release of the Blackberry 8100 Pearl certainly caught plenty of attention as it was the first of these Mobile Internet & E-mail devices that was casting its eye further than the business phone market and trying to make devices previously thought to be overly-complex to use, accessible. The main reason for this was the half-QWERTY keyboard that made the 8100 more like a standard bar phone in terms of appearance, thus widening its appeal when compared to the typical Blackberry devices which would usually contain a full QWERTY keypad but at the expense of user-friendliness & size.

Everyone’s doing it; they’re doing it in their homes, in the privacy of their bedrooms, their lounge rooms and even in the kitchen, but even more so, people are doing it in public. Ten years ago it would’ve been hard to imagine that you would see people doing it on a busy street, but this is the state of play in 2009: people everywhere are accessing the internet from their mobile phones. Mobile internet has come a long way, even in the last five years, with the proliferation of both 3G capable handsets and HTML compatible mobile web browsers, but it’s still not perfect.
