The introduction of Passport by Vodafone is all set to bring about a shift in roaming rates from expensive to affordable. With its cost-effective schemes, it promises to be the cheapest mobile broadband provider abroad. For just £4.99 a day, Vodafone customers can use up to 25MB of data online, which means it will cost them about 20p per MB. If they are interested in using more, then they can get an add-on of 25MB, which would again cost £4.99. As per Vodafone’s estimates, 25 MB is sufficient to carry out many tasks over the internet.
07/14/2009
In what it believes to be the cheapest mobile broadband data charge for using internet abroad, Vodafone has released the Vodafone Passport service for its 3 million customers. For using up to 25MB of data, only £4.99 is charged for a day, which means 20 pence per MB. In addition, a smaller plan of 1MB is introduced for customers who have limited usage under 1MB, charged on their usage per KB, which amounts to 50p per 100KB. For extensive internet access, Vodafone offers 50MB for a price of £9.99 in Europe or £29.99 anywhere outside Europe.

In a new mobile broadband scheme for people going abroad, Vodafone has launched ‘Passport’, which would allow reasonable roaming plans for its customers. The ‘Passport’ scheme sees Vodafone providing to its 2.5 million customers access to data services abroad through their mobile phones, at a reasonable rate of £4.99 per day for up to 25MB, which is just 20p per MB. Every additional usage of 25MB would cost another £4.99.
07/14/2009
Vodafone has recently launched its ‘Passport’ scheme, which allows it to provide a more competitive deal on roaming for its customers. However, working on data would continue to be an expensive affair abroad. The scheme intends to provide Vodafone’s 2.5 million customers, access to data services on their mobile phones abroad at a sum of £4.99 per day for downloads up to 25MB, which comes to 20p per MB. Every additional 25MB would cost an extra £4.99.

With its attractive roaming packages, the new Vodafone Passport promises a hassle-free holiday experience for its 2.5 million strong customer base. These new rates easily fit into the consumers’ budget and make their holidays more enjoyable. The Passport promises that all Vodafone subscribers, for just £4.99 per day, can relaxingly use a maximum of 25MB of data on their cell phones when they are abroad. This amount, if calculated as charge per MB, comes down to 20p.

It’s ’shaken the city’ apparently, a location you would have thought would have been reasonably difficult to surprise by now given recent economic events, but no matter. In a nutshell, he reported that teenagers don’t listen to the radio much or buy many newspapers, but they do like the internet, listen to music, go to the cinema and play computer games.

For the most part, GPRS plans are priced at about 5-10p per 10 KB. This works out to Rs 5-10 per MB. The problem is both with the price and the concept of metering. What is needed is a flat-priced plan that is less than Rs 100 per month. Smartphones are capable of doing a lot, and most of these services require network access. I checked my own data usage on the Nokia E71 in the past couple months - it comes to about 50 MB a month. This works out to an effective rate of Rs 2 / MB.

I’m pretty sure that Vodafone has already announced this mobile broadband/netbook package for the Samsung NC10 as early as April. Unless of course there is something new to the announcement.  But anyway, Vodafone UK is announcing the it will start offering the Samsung NC10 with built-in mobile broadband connectivity. What this simply means is that you can get a free Samsung NC10 netbook if you agree to sign-up for a 24-month service contract that would cost you around £25 and would give you 1GB of data connectivity through Vodafone’s wireless services.

Undoubtedly, the almighty iPhone still lacks some much needed features. The biggest feature missing is an affordable rate plan. I have been a loyal AT&T customer for years, why I don’t know. Probably, because I have sold my soul to them multiple times for new upgrades, so I have been stuck with them (due to contracts). However, AT&T has given me above average service and performance, but it is not cheap. If they lowered their price or came out with a one rate data plan I don’t think Apple could make enough iPhones to cover the increased sales this would cause.
