The 800MHz broadcast spectrum range is being sold off by the government in an effort that will bring the UK at par with other European countries in terms of spectrum allocation for mobile broadband. This will be done by clearing up the airwaves by switching over to digital TV . This had been in the making for quite some time now, but Ofcom officially announced just recently that it had decided to clear up the spectrum for mobile broadband.
07/10/2009
The government had made arrangements to clear out a portion of spectrum in 2003, and had only considered selling a small section, but Ofcom has now stepped up and agreed to clear out the whole 800 MHz range for mobile broadband . Ofcom has made this move to ensure that the UK comes to the same level as other European countries and also to encourage the next generation of mobile broadband services. The rumours had been around for some time but the news has now finally been confirmed by Ofcom, which is likely to bring cheer to mobile broadband providers.

Quite clearly - the team was, and still is, setting up high standards for what Squace shall accomplish. At the bottom you have the dashboard with your favorite Internet services such as Facebook, Twitter and Gmail.

Ofcom finally announced yesterday that it intended to clear up the 800 MHz spectrum for mobile broadband providers. A switch to digital TV has freed up the spectrum that Ofcom now plans to use for mobile broadband. The freeing up of spectrum, also referred to as ‘digital dividend’, will bring the UK closer to the practices followed by other European countries. The government initially had planned to free up only a part of the available spectrum back in 2003.
07/10/2009
Substantiating reports in the news about spectrum allocation decisions, telecoms regulator, Ofcom officially declared its decision to free the 800 MHz band of broadcast spectrum for mobile broadband. Ofcom intends to free this bit of spectrum through a move under which the airwaves will be released by a changeover to digital TV . Ofcom feels that this move would allow the UK to be more in sync with the other European nations on the issue of broadband spectrum allocation.

The world’s largest chip maker is working with Google on the Chrome operating system and has been privy to the project for some time, a spokesman for the company said Friday. Intel’s endorsement is important for the Chrome OS project because of its standing in the personal computing world: Intel microprocessors go into around four-fifths of the world’s computers. Google is aiming the Chrome OS at desktops, laptops and netbooks, all devices dominated by Microsoft Windows, so supporting Chrome could put Intel in an awkward position with Microsoft.

Rumor has it that Intel is in talks with Google to support the Android platform on Intel-based Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs): Intel commented that its strategy is to be the hardware platform of choice across a range of operating systems, and to facilitate the development of an ecosystem which can benefit the industry as a whole and ultimately end-users. Android-based MIDs are unlikely to appear before Intel’s next generation MID platform Moorestown shows up, the sources noted.

I’m convinced that open webtechnologies are suited for more than just web page development. I don’t see why you can’t write desktop applications using open webtechnologies. So, I’m also pretty optimistic about what Google is trying to do with Chrome OS . Many of the problems people currently see with Chrome OS are in my opinion solvable or not relevant for the type of work people do on netbook devices. Javascript can and will be extended with more platform specific functionality , and for other things laptops will no longer be essential.

With the Internet rapidly being decoupled from intimidating desktop computers, the opportunity for radio to expand upon its ubiquity is massive. There is the push to get standard FM receivers integrated as a standard feature in cell phones on one hand and the expansion of Internet-based radio delivery to mobiles on the other. Both are important issues, but today I’ll be looking at the latter. As radio expands into the mobile Internet space, bandwidth is far from the only issue faced.
